A Real Life
on natural skin care, natural hair care, non-toxic skin products, non-toxic body care, chemicals in shampoos, moisturizers, conditioners

from Do Less
It was music to my ears. A cranky old Romanian facialist took one look at my skin and said "You have good skin. Do less and it will stay good." Hmmm, this was a new take on things. I tried her advice. Don't wash so much. Don't buy a lot of products—you don't need them. . . My skin didn't dry out without the night creams—just the opposite—it had a new life to it. After two months, three different people asked me what I was doing to my skin—it looked newer, softer. "I'm doing less," I told them.

on natural feminine hygiene, natural feminine products, natural tampons, non-toxic tampons, dioxins, natural paper products

from Whoa, Nellie! Healthier Feminine Products
No more hush-hush about it—time to switch to healthier feminine products . . . I was on my way to eating healthier foods, making time for exercise, cleaning my home with good things, using natural skin and hair products—slowly but surely making more life-affirming choices. And one day it hit me—what about these tampons?

on vitamin supplements, calcium supplements, bone health, natural vitamins, natural minerals, natural supplements, vitamin C supplements, natural vitamin C, good sources of vitamin C

from Do We Need Vitamin Supplements?
I saw a vitamin ad recently in a health magazine that stopped me in my tracks. At the top of the page were the words—Real Important—over a bounty of fruits and vegetables. Next came—Real Life—with a hot dog on a white-bread bun. Finally the clincher—Real Easy—and a tiny vitamin capsule. . . Imagine—eat what we want, take a few pills, and we're covered. It's tempting, that's for sure. But believe me, it's another illusion, and we're falling for it in droves.

on stress, depression, anti-anxiety drugs, meditation, breathing exercises, herbs for the nervous system, calming herbal remedies

from Calm Down
We are all struggling with stress. But at the same time, it seems in an odd way that we value it. Have you noticed what a big topic of conversation stress has become? It's as if there's a contest going on—stress measures who is busier, whose life is harder, who deserves the most credit, the greatest sympathy . . . the drug companies obviously think we're inept, since every other ad on TV is for a drug to help us function . . . just look at that woman happily making dinner in the anxiety-drug ad. She's so relaxed, so healthy, she's even playing golf again. (Those ads don't mention how easy it is to get hooked.) . . . A pill is not the solution.
