from What Children Need
Everyone wants the best for their children. But how best to achieve it? No question evokes more anxiety among parents . . . The fear comes from the illusion that there is something out there that will assure your child's future. And that this thing—the right friends, the right school, whatever it may be—will enable your child to like herself, be respected by others, and be safe from the unpredictable events of life . . . How do you develop the strength and confidence to make your own family of primary importance, to know that what you're teaching your child is of fundamental, irreplaceable value?

on relationships, marriage, sexuality, sex and relationships, love, commitment

from Loving The One You're With
Our culture is marked by the relentless pursuit of the better deal. We take it as our divine right to go for the bigger house, the faster car, the more prestigious job . . . We have brought an acquisitive, judgmental force into a place where it does not belong—the realm of love. . . It is only possible to project magical properties onto a person if they are at a distance. As you get to know them, the emotional distance disappears and with it goes the image. You see them as they really are, and it's a huge disappointment . . . Eventually, it dawns on most people that this master race of superior partners doesn't exist. At that point, they become more willing to work with the person they're with and to understand the reality of love.

on depression, anti-depressants, motivation, mood regulation, spirituality and depression, meaning, happiness, herbs for depression

from Out Of The Blues: Beating Depression
Despite his situation, I wouldn't put him on antidepressants. He tried whining, then begging. I was unmoved because his attitude toward medication stemmed from the very mind-set that created the depression in the first place.

on envy, jealousy, ego, meaning, spirituality, happiness, simple life, simplify

from Rising Above Envy
But why was she so unhappy when she got what she wished for? The truth is that contentment has nothing to do with what we do or don't have . . . The moment we envy a thing, we assume it's in limited supply. And in this world of scarcity, it's natural for us to compete with one another.
